Edge Of Darkness

Review:

From ACTION TV:

This defining moment of eighties television was first broadcast on BBC 2 and achieved such critical and public reaction that it was very quickly repeated mere weeks later on BBC 1, reaping even higher ratings and yet more critical acclaim.

The series was devised and written by Troy Kennedy Martin, produced by Michael Wearing and made household names of actors Bob Peck and Joanne Whalley.

An apocalyptic political thriller, with heavy doses of symbolism and new age philosophy, the show had a troubled production. Kennedy Martin often wrote and rewrote material to perfect a layered script stripped of non essential dialogue whilst Campbell wanted a more naturalistic approach with all the plot explained. A compromise was made as time ran out (scripts for the final episodes were still unwritten as filming began) with both adopting ideas and approaches from the other.
